She Stops

about

Parenting demands have kept us away for the last few weeks, but we're back and we’ll send a few extra tracks this month to make it up to you.

I wrote She Stops back in August of 2016. This song is about heartbreak and captures a time when I was watching a lot of relationships disappear around me. I listened to The Hounds of the Baskervilles audiobook that summer while sewing tote bags in the basement. I was deep into Luther and remember how afraid I felt watching the first episodes of Season 2. I remember a conversation with a friend over a drink. She loved her partner, but “What if I just don’t love him in ten years? Do I want to be tied down with a wedding ring?” These flashes coalesced into this song - a missing persons case about someone too afraid to confront the death of love.

lyrics

Where did we leave off?
When was her call?
Who turned the kettle down?
Tell me what’s wrong.

Paint her in purples,
Dried into blues.
Is this behavior
Something she’d do?

Call off the dogs,
No scent to find.
This one won’t be found,
Nothing to hide.

Do you miss her
In the pauses?
When the wind stops,
Do you wonder where
Silence begins and she stops?
